Long for
Partial explanation of the painting “Long for”.
  • The upper left section depicts a “knight” on horseback, bearing a sword. This figure, shown with anatomical detail, symbolizes the universal and inescapable force of death. It emphasizes that this knight marks “the beginning of the end for humanity,” signifying that death is an equalizer, affecting all people regardless of their deeds in life, and is ultimately unbeatable.
  • The upper right section shows a figure playing a harp-like instrument. It illustrates the varied human responses to the inevitability of death. While some mourn and repent, others, like the serene figure playing music, face mortality with composure, likened to being “calm as the sea.”
  • The lower section, titled “The Old Man and the Sea,” features an elderly figure (visually appearing as a woman with white hair) in a red hood, overlooking a landscape with water. This part of the painting represents wisdom and legacy. It describes her wisdom as being “like the sea,” vast and accumulated over a lifetime.
